Largest Man-Made Lake of the State

Rocky River Dam was impounded in 1928 to create Candlewood Lake, the state's largest human-made lake. Its waters cover 5,420 acres and have approximately 65 miles of shoreline. The lake has an average depth of 33 feet but can reach depths of 90 feet.

Fun for Everyone

Candlewood Lake is boater-friendly, inviting speed boats, pontoons, jet skis, and other watercraft to its waters. Activities like water skiing, wakeboarding, tubing, and swimming are just as popular.

With plentiful populations of largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, catfish, and perch, the lake has been called the "best fishing hole in Connecticut." It has produced a few state record fish, including a 2lb and 15oz white perch in 1996.

The action does not stop in winter, ice skating, cross-country skiing, and ice fishing begin. It is easy to enjoy the lake with the advantages of seven different marinas offering boat storage and a variety of boat rentals.

The city of Dunbury is a magnificent place to celebrate Independence Day. Locals and visitors flock to the area for a grand fireworks display.
